Nanomaterials
Nanoparticle characterization, thin films, carbon nanotubes, and advanced material synthesis
Nanomaterials research demands imaging at the very limits of resolution. Scanning electron microscopy provides essential morphological characterization of nanoparticles, nanostructures, and thin films—from synthesis optimization through to quality control.
The SNE-Alpha desktop SEM delivers 5nm resolution at 30kV, enabling visualization of nanoparticles, nanofibers, and nanostructured surfaces. Combined with EDS for elemental analysis, it provides comprehensive characterization of nanomaterials for research and development applications.
Key Nanomaterials Applications
- Nanoparticle Characterization: Measure particle size, shape, and distribution. Assess agglomeration and dispersity of colloidal suspensions
- Carbon Nanotubes: Image CNT morphology, bundle structure, and alignment. Assess quality and purity of synthesized materials
- Thin Film Analysis: Examine film morphology, grain structure, and surface defects. Measure film thickness in cross-section
- Quantum Dots: Visualize quantum dot size, shape, and spatial distribution on substrates
- Nanowires & Nanofibers: Characterize diameter, length distribution, and surface morphology
- Porous Materials: Image nanopore structure, pore size distribution, and internal surfaces
Sample Preparation Considerations
Nanomaterial samples require careful preparation to preserve native structure:
- Dispersion: Sonicate suspensions to break up agglomerates before mounting
- Substrate Selection: Use clean silicon wafers, carbon film, or polished metal stubs
- Drying: Critical point drying preserves structure of suspended materials
- Coating: Ultra-thin carbon or Pt/Pd coating for non-conductive nanomaterials
